Internal Family Systems Therapy (or IFS Therapy) recognizes that we have different "parts" within us and that each of us has a core "Self" that is calm and compassionate. The goal of this approach is to help you access it by separating it from other parts that may behave unhelpfully.

Taking the idea of ​​family/systems therapy and applying it to ourselves as individuals, Inner Family Systems Therapy helps you explore your rich inner world to gain more insight and ultimately discover the "you" underneath it all. We'll explore the therapy in more depth, including what it can help with and what you can expect when working with an IFS therapist.

The belief that underlies Internal Family Systems Therapy is that each of us has a core that cannot be harmed and is peaceful, connected, and compassionate. It can be thought of as our "true self". Various life experiences and situations we encounter throughout life cause other parts of us to try to protect ourselves from harm. Even if these parts have good intentions, they can become extreme and overprotective, making it difficult for us to access our core Self.

The goal of Internal Family Systems Therapy is to help us reconnect with this core Self so that we can let go of the more extreme nature of our parts. These parts can then function harmoniously under the guidance of the Self. An analogy that can help us understand this is to think of the Self as the conductor of an orchestra and our parts as musicians.

When I take the lead and organize the music, it can bring out the best in our parts and the melody is beautiful.

The human mind is divided into several different parts.

Everyone has an underlying Self that should be in charge of coordinating the inner "parts".

The parts that deal with non-extreme behavior are beneficial. There are no "bad parts", instead the goal of therapy is to help the parts discover their non-extreme roles.

Personal development and growth lead to the development of our internal system.

When modifying an internal system, the changes will be reflected externally and vice versa, so both internal and external systems must be considered.
